Grace Bernard is the kind of murderer you want to go out for drinks with.
I absolutely adore Elizabeth Day, but for whatever reason I put off reading her fiction for the longest time. I think it was the thriller label. It somehow didn't match what I knew of her, and so I let the books pass me by. Then I heard her speak at an event and she said she felt like that label was inaccurate, and she would actually like to spearhead the creation of a new sub genre: a compeller. I was sold.
Books: *.....*
Julia Samuel is one of those people I wouldn't know existed if it wasn't for podcasts, but she's been a guest on basically every staple show I listen to, so when she came to do an event in my city a few weeks back obviously I went.
There is a small subset of genius that manages to be truly, laugh-out-loud funny and totally fucking heartbreaking at the same time. Emma Jane Unsworth is that subset. By the end of Adults, I felt like she invented it.
I recently ventured out into the world of books that are concerned with plot rather than feelings and basically discovered that for the moment, feelings interest me more than swashbuckling or paranormal creatures or whatever.
